Agency’s Background information: UNAIDS is the Joint UN Program on HIV/AIDS, which unites 10 UN Agencies that work together as one team.  UNAIDS Secretariat has been active in the Kyrgyz Republic since 2003 and works through the UN Theme Group on HIV/AIDS and Joint UN Team on AIDS. At first UN Theme Group on HIV/AIDS was established in 1996. In July 2006 UNAIDS has coordinated the development of the Joint UN Team on AIDS and is working to develop a Joint UN Programme on HIV and AIDS, which highlights detailed technical and financial support provided by the UN family to the country response on HIV/AIDS. Main priority of UNAIDS is to support the Government in further implementation of the Strategic Document on HIV/AIDS prevention for 2006-2010, based on UNAIDS Technical Division of Labour. UNAIDS' mission in Kyrgyzstan is to assist Kyrgyzstan’s efforts to mount an effective and comprehensive response to HIV/AIDS.

Mission Statement   

As the leading advocate for worldwide action against HIV/AIDS, the global mission of UNAIDS is to lead, strengthen and support an expanded response to the epidemic that will:

    * Prevent the spread of HIV
    * Provide care and support for those infected and affected by the disease
    * Reduce the vulnerability of individuals and communities to HIV/AIDS
    * Alleviate the socioeconomic and human impact of the epidemic

 Our Objectives:

    * To empower leadership and advocacy for effective action on the epidemic
    * To strengthen system of strategic information to guide the efforts of partners
    * To build capacities to track, monitor and evaluate the epidemic and country response
    * To mobilize civil society engagement and partnership development
    * To facilitate access to technical, financial and political resources at country level
